Being in the Time of Corona.
By Roland
Dear Dancer, It is a long time since I have contributed to this newsletter. But this week I have felt a need to share with you something about myself and my life in the School of Movement Medicine office.

At this time of Corona, I am very aware of being told of the lessons that we need to learn from this experience.  These lesson are many and varied: caring for each other, the importance of the sacrifice of our individual liberty to support the great whole, lessons about how the stillness that has descended on the planet can be seen as a blessing with wildlife returning to places where it has not been witnessed for a long time, cleaner air, reduced production of CO2, quieter cities and how all this can be seen for as blueprint for the way we might wish for things to be in the futures.  And, of course, there are obvious lessons to be learned about paying heed to danger when it is first shown to us rather than waiting till the calamity is upon us and the rather clear analogy that we should draw with climate change.  We need to act now and fast in order to protect ourselves in the future.  It is no good waiting hoping that something will turn up and make the problem go away.

I also wonder what the lesson is for myself.  I, perhaps like many other people, wake in the morning and hope it has all gone away.  That all the individual Corona viruses have decided they don’t like it here and got into an Alien spacecraft and departed for ever.  Or that a magic cure has been found overnight or that the Spring weather has forced it into a retreat and that by the time it re-emerges that a vaccine will be found.  I also experience bouts of fear.  I may catch it and die.  My loved ones and friends may die.  How much longer is it going to take till the freedom to live my life will return?  When will the borders open again and we can dance together? Yet the situation remains, so I have to ask "What do I learn from Corona?"

What have I learned?

One of the first things I did when this crisis started to really hit us was to go and buy seeds and plants and every day since then I have spent many hours in my garden, sowing seeds, preparing vegetable beds, tidying things up and add masses of material to my beloved compost heaps.  Having my hands in the soil, watching the seeds sprouts and then handling the little seedlings and either planting them out or putting them into pots is one of the things that gives me the most pleasure in life.

During the past few years I have not given myself enough time to properly tend to my garden.  I would always prioritise my work,  even though I knew that if I spent some quality time in the garden my work would be better, as I would be doing what my soul was asking.  Now I look at the little green seedlings and see the promise of new life and that helps me to find the steadiness to flatten out my anxiety about death and illness and to be both grounded in the present and have hope and faith in the future.  And the lesson?  The lesson for me is to remember to do the thing that will help me most at this time and to listen to the inner voice and trust it. Neglecting to listen to this inner voice whispering "Go outside Roland, the garden needs your touch" results in me being not be fully charged and so experiencing more fear and anxiety about the future.

Movement Medicine is also very much about planting seeds, growing our inner plants and is a form of individual and collective gardening.  For most of us dance and movement is not only our practice, but it is our passion. We experience it as a gift from Spirit to be able to dance on the dance floor in company of others.  It is something we thought was always going to be available.  Now, though, that is no longer possible as nearly everywhere classes and workshops are cancelled. Yet, perhaps what Corona can teach us is, that even in this time of separation, we can still connect and be with others and that, in spite of Corona, we grow stronger and, thanks to aid of modern technology we can still experience a form of dancing collectively while staying safe at home and recharge our batteries and so be in a better state to face our fears.

Please ready the article by Susannah and Ya’Acov in this newsletter about their various online offering.  Or go to

One day we will meet each other on the dance floors again.

Wishing you strength and happiness.

Hello all, we’re sending this through the newsletter as many people told us that the email that was sent earlier in the week didn’t land with them. As well as that, there were some errors. Apologies! So, if you’ve already read this, please just check the dates and details and move on.

News about our new offering: 21 Gratitudes Movement Medicine Online Study Hub

Please note: Registration for membership of the Study Hub is open for just 1 week: 10th - 17th April 2020.

 A Hello from Ya’Acov & Susannah

What a moment we are living in. Beyond the natural fear of the unknown, and of course, with awareness and daily for those who are suffering in our world, we feel this time as a genuine opportunity to wake up a little more together. Tectonic plates are shifting under all of our feet. We’re quite sure you noticed.

Now more than ever, we find we are needing our practice to help us remain in connection with the ground and to our own creativity.  Here we are, moving our medicine and reaching out to you to send you our love and to give you news about our new offering.

News about the launch of 21 Gratitudes – The Movement Medicine Study Hub

As we’ve been responding to the pandemic we’ve been offering free Movement Medicine webinars. This does not mean that the membership site has started. We’d like to clarify:

The Movement Medicine Study Hub opens registration for membership 10th -17th April. More details below.

21 Gratitudes is the umbrella under which all of our online work will be available. This includes the free webinars, the pay as you go events, online courses AND the Study Hub.

As you know, before this crisis began, we’d been busy developing our online Movement Medicine Study Hub. The Study Hub offers a step by step, coherent in-depth embodied learning opportunity in the art of Movement as Medicine to support both your movement practice and the rest of your life. It will provide a weekly pulse of input for members. These include international community practice webinars, a step by step (in bite-sized chunks) study of and journey through the 21 stations of the MM mandala as they apply to you and your life and morning or evening drumming prayers with Ya’Acov and/or Susannah. There will be different ways to give and receive support with other members of the Study Hub community as we journey together.

We want to strengthen the possibilities of online interconnectivity and learning and offer you resources to face and make the most of these times and whatever will follow with as much creativity, ground and support as possible.

We see the Study Hub as relevant both for people new to Movement Medicine and for experienced dancers to whom it will offer new ways to learn, understand, share, connect and practice.

We are excited by what the membership site offers in terms of new ways of us teaching. If you are feeling the call to become a founding member of 21 Gratitudes (and we hope you are) you will have the chance to play a role in shaping the vibration of what we sense will become a beautiful, strong, mutually supportive global community of movers and shakers.

In celebration

We are so proud of our community of Movement Medicine Professionals and how they are stepping up with such creativity and wisdom in these challenging times.

As is happening globally, there is an emergence of self-organising community intelligence. One of the things that we are struck by is the level of care and support that is being offered within the community of MM Professionals for each other, so that teachers can be resourced and supported in their offering.

Apparently, according to Dr.David Hamilton, kindness is twice as contagious as the virus! Now there’s a thought. Thank you to everyone who is putting kindness into the world.

Emergence & Empowerment in an Age of Uncertainty
Ya’Acov is very honoured to have been invited by Jocelyn Mercado to be one the guest speakers at this online conference which will take place 8th – 12th April. His offering be at 10 am Eastern Time / 3 pm UK Time on April 11th. He strongly recommends this conference to everyone. The conference is free and sign up details are below.

Jocelyn writes:

“Even before the current coronavirus crisis, one of the most important questions we could ask ourselves was:

In 20 or 50 years, what will the children of the world — those here now, and those born in the future — think of us?

When they look back at their parents… us…. the “adults” in the room…

Will they feel gratitude? Or anger?

And even before the coronavirus, you as a visionary and leader were probably realizing:

We cannot leave our children a world with rising seas, catastrophic storms, drought, barren forests, dead birds and bees, and political chaos that overwhelm our infrastructure.

And now, add to this litany yet another crisis — the health pandemic we’re all experiencing.

We are at a choice point now as to what kind of future we want to leave our children.

The most immediate choice, of course, is that we most all practice social distancing and shelter-at-home, to “flatten the curve” of the coronavirus.

But this is just the urgent first step.

After we flatten the curve — which could be just months, if we mobilize massively now — then another question arises:

What do we want our world to look like once we’ve weathered the storm of this crisis?

Do we want to go back to the same-old-same-old?

Despite all the massive challenges and immediate suffering around us… for perhaps the first time in history….

This pandemic and the global unity that’s being created, offers us an incredible chance to leave a different legacy to our children.

In the midst of this current upheaval, new systems, new ideas, and new leaders are rising to meet the challenge.

It was surely clear to you before the coronavirus that the current system was not working.

And now, the pandemic has pushed that system to its breaking point, and made it clear to everyone else.

Which means: We’ve truly never had such a window of opportunity… and we may never have one again...

For true and lasting change, of our old & outdated systems and structures, that we already knew were not working.

Our current crisis has highlighted exactly where we need to NOT go back to the status quo.

For example — They’re seeing blue skies and hearing birds sing for the first time in a lifetime in some cities in China. How can we keep building on that, for the whole planet?

We are here to build a future that our children will be happy and thriving in. And will thank us for creating.

And I know that YOU are one of the activated leaders this world needs to solve our multiple problems arising and becoming crystal clear at this time.

You are one of the bridges that will take us over these oceans of peril — You are here to be a completely different type of leader than we’ve had before.

You are here to be both an architect and builder of this bridge to a better, more sustainable, peaceful, kind, loving and just world.

Which is why I’m inviting you to a special event that will give you all the tools, resources, deep wisdom, and societal blueprints you need need to become the type of architect and builder that our world needs most.

This is a global online conference called:

Emergence & Empowerment in an Age of Uncertainty:
