Antibiotics update

Non-prescription pads, posters and window stickers were distributed to GP practices and community pharmacies in November as part of the KEEP CALM AND LOOK AFTER YOURSELF campaign to help patients manage common winter illnesses.

The campaign includes a dedicated website www.keepcalmthiswinter.org.uk  with information on common winter illnesses, what the symptoms are, how to treat them, how long they will last.

If you need more non –prescription pads, please contact your NECS Medicines Optimisation Team.

Key actions for primary care, highlighted by the UK Five Year Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy 2013 – 2018 involve:

  • Only prescribing antibiotics in situations where they are clearly indicated
  • Appropriate choice of antibiotic if an agent is actually required
  • Ensuring patients understand their responsibilities around compliance once an antibiotic is prescribed

The NECS Medicines Optimisation Team have run a number of one hour workshops  on prescribing strategies for patients with infections at Time Out sessions across the North East and Cumbria area.  E-learning educational resources  for use in practice/ CCG time-in sessions have been developed and will be made available soon via the Medicines Optimisation website.
