School of Movement Medicine - Mindfulness in Motion

Issue: October Newsletter

Embodiment. Movement. Community.
By Hanna Maria
Dear Ones, here is a full newsletter with sharings, offerings, invitations and celebrations of various kinds. What abundance. As I unsuspectingly started putting the newsletter together, more and more contributions kept coming in. It felt like, with the ‘dead-line’ present, a gate opened. Check out what came through, from various PC’s via the internet into this “Hello” to you from the School of Movement Medicine.

You can also add your own voice to the newsletter. This invitation is always there, and I am happy to repeat it here. This creation is from and for the community. It is one way to share of your experiences of Movement Medicine and the way you carry and water them back home. Or sharing a poem, a short story, ...
(Send contributions, with an image to go with it, to either to Roland roland@rwevents.co.uk or to myself, Hanna: hannaspostbox@gmail.com)

I chose this heading (Embodiment. Movement. Community.) because this newsletter brings an abundance of all that. It seems like, after this period of inward gestation (for some of us), there is a spilling out of offerings, as more people have had time for what really matters to them. There are many wonderful and varied invitations, offerings and more, from Menopause to Embodied Listening and a new Movement Medicine Association website. You will find all of them bellow.

Abundance of Embodiment, Movement and Community is really what the community of Movement Medicine brings, amongst other ‘things’. It’s why I enjoy this community. It’s what is mirrored in the contributions here.
As I ponder, it seems to me that all three are such an innate part of life and living.

Embodiment: Simply by being here, we are in the reality of embodiment. Being on earth means being in a body, the reality here is of this frequency, of matter. Anything to manifest here must embody itself.
Movement: Our bodies of course are always in movement, until we die. Movement is Life. Life is Movement. Plus it’s what keeps us balanced and healthy.
Community: We are (as I have learned from Susannah and other sources) very social ‘animals’/beings. Community is what we are naturally drawn to. It’s what makes survival possible and what shapes and holds us. ‘I am because we are.’ (Ubuntu)

Embodiment, Movement and Community are things we have partly lost. Things inherently human and hence very needed, and luckily more and more ‘growing’ (offered and wanted) again. In the context of this year, after a long time of much online engagement (though at our house there was no internet for almost 5 months ;-), after very literal and enforced house-arrest (here in South Africa) and global ‘social distancing’, perhaps these three words mean something different to us now.

For me certainly, and for probably most others, for example, the fact that I was not allowed to gather with people over such a long time has had an effect. When first I did see dear friends again, I realized just how deeply precious this is and how much I'd missed it – real human connection. Sitting together by the fire. Sharing a meal. Perhaps singing a song. Definitely laughing a laugh ... Absolutely Priceless.

So, below are inspiring news, courses, websites and events – all to do with Community, Embodiment and Movement – all the yummy things we so need. In fact, I find those among the most important aspects of life.

Wishing us all yummy embodiment, free movement, and healthy communities,

Hanna Maria

One Wedding Anniversary, Three Invitations and a Celebration
By Susannah Darling Khan
Dear all, by the time you read this, we will have celebrated our 31st Wedding anniversary; 31 years married and 34 years together. What a journey! And now, along with so many others, getting to know relationship in the time of Corona and what it’s like to be together day in day out. As I write that I’m aware of those who are living solo in the time of Corona, and the duress of that. I’ll come to back to this thread later. Just wanted you to know I’m aware of you!

As the adventure and the deepening of our dance together continues, we are frequently reminded of the power of what we call the 'shadow marriage'. What that means is that just in the way in which the beauty of our souls mutually recognise and support the other, so the opposite is also true. My pain stories and unconscious survival strategies inevitably re-enforce Ya’Acov’s, as do his mine. Over and over again we have to re-learn the lesson that seeking to find out "who is to blame?", "who began this?", “who caused this fracas?” are not useful questions. They do not lead anywhere other than more pain and suffering, through more masked aggression, thinking it is simply being self-protective, until one of us is big enough to take responsibility and lead us back into the sunlit lands of possibility and healing.

And the places we are travelling, the vibrations of love, tender joy, fierce passion and deep mutual understanding, are such a harvest, such a wonder, such a blessing. I am deeply grateful that we have each actively chosen commitment, and for all the support and love we have received on so many levels. I am grateful for the resources, practices and understandings that we bring to bear on our recalcitrant selves, that shed gentle light on the knots we can get wound up within. I have only heard one couple speak about the wonders of how a long-term love affair being able to grow more and more exquisite in the way we are experiencing. And this is Prof. Jake and Dr Eva Chapman, who keep lighting the path and demonstrating for us how strong one has to be to stay true on the path of love. The good news is, the rewards can be truly incredible.

Whilst here we are revelling in our Dartmoor sanctuary tending (and being tended by) our chickens and ponies and land, we’ve nevertheless been experiencing what feels like reverberations of the anxiety, fear and pain of these times. We feel these in the world wide web vibrationally, even when we take a holiday from the news. Whether this is our own anxiety, which it certainly includes, we feel that we are experiencing (and why wouldn’t we, given how inter-connected we all actually are) the vibration of our species trying to come to terms with the massive changes we are living within. Over and over again we have discovered how naming what we are experiencing has helped re-unite ourselves with the good ground of steady being. We have been using and needing our practice like never before.

Three invitations:

ONE

As you may have heard us say, we’ve been preparing an online version of our work for a few years. It was due to go live last April and so it did, with the courageous founder members who took the leap with us before we’d fully arrived in recognising what this 21 Gratitudes Study Hub actually was going to be. Thank you to those founder co-explorers!

If you are onboard, you will know how we are travelling on this odyssey around the 21 stations (thus '21 Gratitudes') of the Movement Medicine mandala month by month. We visit each station conceptually and experientially as our monthly focus shifts from gateway to gateway.

Making these videos of 'nutshells of wisdom' (thank you Kristin Glenewinkel for this naming) is such a beautiful way of sharing our understanding and love for this life. Sharing the live classes, ceremonies, and drum prayers with the Hub members is feeding a rich tapestry of inter-connection which has only just started as we work out, in consultation with Hub members, what is possible and what is needed.

What we have only recently realised is how profoundly we are on this illuminating journey around the mandala ourselves. The Mandala represents a vision of the different aspects of the human relational universe. Each gateway is like a lens, a prism, through which to enquire into one aspect of our own relationship with the whole of life; to enquire, learn, experience, heal and grow. And, so as we ourselves bring each gateway (aspect) into focus for ourselves each month, we are profoundly on this voyage, this odyssey, ourselves, together with the members of the Hub.

At the same time as being an ongoing odyssey around the inner and outer universe, the Hub is also becoming a library of resources about each of the aspects of Movement Medicine in which you can find explanations, practices and inspiration to go on growing your embodied consciousness of yourself and your purpose and direction AND your knowledge of Movement Medicine. And all of this, from home and at an accessible cost!

So, why am I telling you all this? First of all, I am proud of our work and the development of this form of it! (can you tell?!). I am happy that we’ve created a way to share the depth of this work around the world in an accessible way. And the Study Hub doors are opening again soon (October 26-30). If you are interested in Movement Medicine, if you valued working with us on the dance floor in the old days, if you want to in the future, I think it’s a no-brainer to begin now. We’d love to welcome you into this growing worldwide community of embodied learning.

Go here and sign up if you want to be sure to hear when the doors open for a few days on the 26th October!

TWO

At the beginning of lockdown, I heard a whisper in my ear to make a course about Embodied Listening. Speaking with Zoe, a nurse who was aware of what the NHS was facing and thinking about my Dad, and all the people who would be in isolation for god knows how long, made me recognise that listening skills could be a very important survival skill. In a time when so many of us are literally 'out of touch' with others, deep listening is the new hug.

I realised that the listening practices which we teach as a normal part of Movement Medicine 'in the room' are not skills that are normally taught or known. I had an extraordinary time extracting this Embodied Listening course from my consciousness and committing it into videos, audio practices, and in writing. I feel that, through this, I’ve made my love for our humanity manifest in a way that is accessible and useful. Whether you are wanting to deepen your relationship with yourself, support with making zoom calls with your family and friends more meaningful; whether you are wanting to deepen your intimate relationship, enhance all your communication skills, work with a practice buddy on the Study Hub, and/or skill up with these powerful tools for collaborative living – it’s available and it’s here.
I invite you to partake in this medicine for our times.

THREE

News from the Music Medicine shop:

  • We are open again to send out orders in the post

  • We have autographed copies of Ya’Acov’s book, Shaman, a profound and practical invocation of the Inner Shaman.

  • We also have autographed copies of two extraordinary new books by Eva Chapman: Butterflies and Demons and Sexy at 70, A Spiritual Quest.

  • Invocation (smudge oil) is available again. Please note, because of its nature Invocation cannot be sent overseas. Invocation is regretfully only available by post in the UK.

  • We have our normal full range of glorious downloadable music and CDs, some of which are guided movement meditations to hold you in your practice.

You are invited to browse in the shop and perhaps let something find you that brings joy and medicine into your or someone else's life.

Lastly, the Celebration:

The Movement Medicine Association is launching its new website on the 10th October. I am aware in myself of such a strong need and desire to be together in the flesh dancing again. As different areas come out of lockdown, it will be local classes with local teachers which are safe and possible first, and some are already happening, sometimes outdoors. We are so happy that so many extra-ordinary Movement Medicine teachers are bringing this work into the room, the forest and into online spaces.

The new website is beautiful and will help you to find your most local events. All the teaches and facilitators we have trained rock and so does the new website, which will be a one-stop shop, where you can find out whatever is going on globally with Movement Medicine.

Congratulations to Camille Barrios and the whole Movement Medicine Association!

I wish you well in these extra-ordinary times, whether you are meeting the rigours of solo time, or the rigours of being face to face within your family or relationship.
Don’t forget to dance!

With love, Susannah Darling Khan.

A Personal Sharing from Ya’Acov
By Ya'Acov Darling-Khan
In this article, Ya’Acov shares the challenges and learnings that these past six months have been personally, relationally and professionally. As we approach the next ‘open gate period’ (October 26-30) for 21 Gratitudes – The Movement Medicine online Study Hub, he shares more about his growing understanding and excitement about this opportunity to really bring the dance back home that the Study Hub offers.

It’s been a while since we’ve been in touch but as the trees turn golden brown again, and the autumn rains fall here in Devon, we want to reach out to you all, this marvellous worldwide community of human beings, who we miss so very much.

We miss our work in the many countries and cities we have been blessed to visit during our 32 years on the road. Even though we remain connected to many of you through 21 Gratitudes (more about this later), online work is just not the same as ‘in the room’ work and it will never replace it. Nor is it meant to.

As the pandemic landed in all our lives, we could see clearly that this situation was going to have serious and long-lasting repercussions. Very early on we understood that the fairest thing we could do for ourselves and our organisers and for you, was to make a clear choice to cancel all our workshops for a year.

We are very blessed. We live in the countryside. We have land to walk on. And COVID time has presented us with the opportunity to do something completely new – to stay at home and really get to know that land, our relationship and our work on a much deeper level.

Naturally, we are connected to what is happening in our world. We acknowledge the untold suffering that this pandemic has brought to so many people, many of whom are dancers within this community. We acknowledge the political upheavals that have on the one hand, opened our hearts, eyes and minds to many things Susannah and I had been only partially aware of. At the same time, we humans have a tendency to think that the mistakes of the past won’t be repeated. And in this, we run the risk of creating a dangerous polarisation where to disagree with, or question any side of the political narrative runs the risk of being cancelled, or further excluded. Polarisation is a choice and it’s not one we are willing to make. Making enemies of those that have different views than us involves a refusing to see them. That is not who I am. Nor is it what Movement Medicine is.

During these times, we have been in such a deep process on so many levels. Personally, not being on the road has given me the time to consider so many aspects of my life that frankly, in the last few years, I hadn’t had the time to.

In the summer, I took myself out on vision quest. I sat by the fire and prayed my heart out. All I asked was that my death would be close by to keep me focused. In short, what I understood was that for the whole of my life, I have been doing my very best to get somewhere where I wasn’t. I don’t regret this in the slightest. Quite the contrary. My determination to know who I am and give everything that’s inside me to say thank you for this absolute fucking miracle that we are here at all has been appropriate and successful. In April, I turned 56, the same age that my father died of multiple cancers. The ceremony helped me to see that I have now entered a different cycle of my life. I’ve passed through the gateway that is the years often named as mid-life crisis, and what I heard from the spirits that have always inspired and guided me so well was very simple.

“You have arrived where you intended to. You have LAND-ed. You are here. We invite you to enjoy your life to the very fullest you can whilst your heart still beats.”

Had I not enjoyed the privilege of being human up until now? Well, yes, I really had loved and enjoyed my life. But the pace that I (and maybe our whole western world) was moving at had made it impossible to really appreciate what life was giving me. At the beginning of the pandemic, I had been astonished, humbled and somewhat ashamed at the recognition of my own profligacy. Moving at that speed necessarily means more consumption on all levels. Working that hard means the need to compensate with quick fixes. And the speed made it hard to even taste my food, no matter how many Michelin stars the chef had. Now, with our income gone and no support from our government – they had to draw the line somewhere suddenly, in a way that I hadn’t had to do since my early 20’s, every expenditure had to be questioned. Thanks to our very ethical and marvellous bank, we had a mortgage holiday. We cancelled all outgoings that weren’t absolutely necessary. We made plans to see this through. And we thanked our lucky stars that, for the past three years, we had been planning the launch of the Movement Medicine Study Hub.

Meanwhile, I danced like crazy. More than at any other time in my life, I found myself needing my practice. And so, I leaned into the medicine of movement and our practices. Of course, there were my own ancestral fears of survival. The memories of the uncertainties and unknowns that they had lived with as the norm, stormed into my dreams and practice space. I cried and shouted and shook. I used the practices we have worked so hard to share with you. And I have never been so grateful to all my teachers and everything I learned from them that are so much a part of our work.

In April, as planned, we launched the Study Hub. And what a teaching this is proving to be. We are six months in now and beginning to really find our feet. As I already said, the Study Hub was never meant to replace being in the room together. And it never will. However, for many years, we have been pondering how to best support people to integrate the insights gained in the altered state that Movement Medicine puts us in to. We started with Bringing the Dance Back Home webinars seven years ago. We learned a lot about teaching through a camera lens. But the Study Hub is a different ‘animal’ altogether.

For one thing, it makes our work much more accessible to many more people around the world; the Study Hub truly is, already, a world-wide community. Perhaps the most interesting thing that we have learned so far is that creating the content for the Hub is giving us the opportunity, much in the same way that we do in the Long Dance, to travel deeply through the 21 Gateways that make up the landscape of Movement Medicine.

After four months of preparing the video lessons, live classes, ceremonies, prayer sessions, and everything else that is part of making the Hub thrive, we became aware of how deeply engaged we are with the material. As well as breaking our work down into bite sized chunks designed to be inspiring and digestible, we are recognising that, of course, we are taking the journey we are offering ourselves. More and more, we are loving the personal enquiries that are naturally so intrinsic to the weekly pulse and monthly focus that the Hub catalyses. Any of you who have ever studied Movement Medicine will know something of how these 21 Gateways are a landscape that encourage us all to stand up, grow up and play our role as soulful, engaged human beings in this life.

Don’t forget to sign up to the waitlist to receive all the news about the open gate period.

And of course, any of you who are in long-term relationship will know that COVID time has been a relationship intensive. I am writing this the day before our 31st wedding anniversary (34 years together); and to celebrate, I can safely say to you that in these past six months, we have learned more about ourselves, our relationship and our work than in the previous three decades. After what feels like thousands of years of war between man and woman, blame and counter-blame, cruelty of all kinds – we have found the way to actually take responsibility for who we are, what we feel, and step out of the vicious circle which keeps insuring continued suffering for all. If you don’t know what we specifically mean by the vicious circle, I humbly suggest you read chapter 8 of my latest book Shaman (signed editions now available).

“Vicious circles are self‐perpetuating blame and counter‐blame patterns which spiral deeper and deeper into negativity and destruction. They can happen within us and between us, and they frequently do. Our world is full of them and our media is full of the resulting aggravation.”

Susannah and I have made a passionate and fierce peace that is neither compromised nor flattened out and neutralised by any spiritual bullshit or bypassing. This is the harvest of 34 years of learning what it takes to actually feel safe enough to open to who the other one ACTUALLY is. We are mapping this landscape and plan to offer work to couples again at some point, as soon as we can. But if you want a good place to start, please do avail yourself of Susannah’s latest masterpiece, the Embodied Listening Course. If there was ever a time in which we need to learn to listen better to ourselves and each other, that time is now. We have successfully used the material in this course with our families (neither of which are particularly into this kind of work) on zoom over lockdown. The effect? We feel we know and love the people in our families much better than we ever did before. How’s that for a result!

Finally, I am in the process of setting up my own latest offering which will be 1-1 work online under the name of Point of Light. More soon.

There is much more I could write, and I will again soon. In the meantime, thanks so much for reading. From my home to yours. From my very human heart to yours, may you, your loved ones and families be safe and well on all levels.

With so much love and respect for all of us who have chosen to be here in this time. I have seen a future that makes sense of all of this. To get there, as many of us as possible are going to have to Stand Up, Grow Up and Play Our Role. See you on the Study Hub or as soon as is safely possible on a dance floor.

Before I end, I want to take the time to acknowledge all the Movement Medicine Teachers and Facilitators we have trained. They are all represented by the Movement Medicine Association which has a marvellous new website about to launch. We are proud of all of our teachers and since local events are likely to be what’s on offer for the moment. We are so glad that these wonderful, creative, passionate and unique human beings are all out there, finding their ways to offer this potent medicine for our times. We commend them to you.

Hearing a Soul Whisper! An Invitation from Susannah
By Susannah Darling Khan
I’ve brought my love for our humanity and our world into a form which I am so happy and proud and relieved to be able to share with you. On Movement Medicine dance floors, small listening circles with very clear protocols and structure are a normal part of how we work. In the resonance of the listening field, people are empowered to hear themselves more deeply, and often discover what they actually already knew, but didn’t know they knew.

In the safety of these structures, deep, real and self-responsible sharing occurs, and people are also enabled to learn from each other, as well as making conscious and owning the gold found on the dance floor.

During lockdown I realised that I had almost been taking this skill set for granted. I realised HOW important it is for us all as humans, to have our communication received, and that I had something to share about this. I heard a whisper in my ear to make a course about Embodied Listening. Speaking with Zoe, a nurse who was aware of what the NHS was facing and thinking about my Dad, and all the people who would be in isolation for god knows how long, made me recognise that listening skills could be a very important survival skill. I realised that the listening practices which we teach as a normal part of Movement Medicine “in the room” are not skills that are normally taught or known.

I had an extraordinary time extracting this Embodied Listening course from my consciousness and committing it into videos, audio practices, and into writing. I feel that, through this, I’ve made my love for our humanity manifest in a way that is accessible and useful, with the help of the amazing Kata Máthé who did the visuals, pure ecstasy for someone like me who thinks visually but can’t draw! Thank you, Kata!

This course offers support and guidance in the following

  • With your relationship with yourself, including with your own inner 'wise elder'
  • Making zoom calls with your family and friends more meaningful
  • Deepening your intimate relationship
  • Enhancing all your communication skills
  • PLUS: you get to work with a practice buddy on the Study Hub, or an ongoing or new support group.

It’s available and it’s here.
I invite you to partake in this medicine for our times.

I want to share this stuff because it works and I see it work every day in my own life. And I see the pain, loneliness of the spirit that occurs because we simply do not learn this stuff at school.

If you want to study with me, have ever enjoyed studying with me, I’ve distilled Susannah medicine into this course. Plus, I do explain all about why elephants have got SO much to do with it!

Please do share this round, as, whatever the content of anyone’s communication, deep listening skills make a profound difference to finding the gate to the field of co-creative possibility.

With my love,

Susannah

The Gift of Listening
By Jilan Anwar
It is a rare gift to walk into a space where the honest feelings of the heart are welcomed within the deep and resonant field of attentive listening; a field which emerges when received by the fully embodied and undivided presence of another.

Many times during Movement Medicine workshops and Apprenticeship module trainings with Susannah and Ya’Acov, it has become apparent to me what a profound part of personal healing, community healing, and planetary healing the role which the work of learning to listen deeply to another has to contribute, in softening and rewiring our internal fragmentation.

I definitely never learnt these precious listening skills at school, or in any form of education since leaving school, until I started my journey with the School of Movement Medicine.

The current internal splitting of ourselves between distractions and a lack of capacity to both meet the moment, and remain present in the moment, has manifested in a harsh external fracturing of our interaction with each other and the world around us.

I’ve often been struck by the sharp contrast in the quality of listening I’m being taught to give and receive during my time on Movement Medicine dance floors, juxtaposed with the less than coherent listening field I’ve stepped back into, when re-entering the day to day world of society’s untrained listening bandwidth.

All too often in the day to day word, to paraphrase the words of Julia Butterfly Hill; a lot of talking occurs between those present, and yet very little communication transpires.

I feel very much inspired that so many more people will now have access to the teachings Susannah is presenting in her recently released Embodied Listening course.

It feels to me as if the quiet key to our collective future is not in re-strategising the threads of our old unsustainable way of life, but in fully expanding our ability to listen for guidance from a greater intelligence beyond ourselves, which is also inherent in the Earth.

The invitation is to listen with new receptivity, so that we can hear the bell call of the true ‘’North’’ of harmony already mapped and singing inside of nature’s compass.

My experience of the Movement Medicine way of being received, is that to be listened to in the mirrored light of someone else’s sincere presence, is to feel a seed of light switch on inside of myself, in a way that reconnects me with my own clarity, a calmness, and a deeper connection with the listeners, turning the ordinary action of listening and being listened to into a Sacred act.

I truly believe, that in a time when everything from the macro environment of this planet, to our micro environment at home inside of our hearts is yearning for our urgent, and yet kind attention, learning to be both the giver and receiver of embodied listening is literally a life saving skill; one which welcomes us into a more compassionate conversation, from which we can choose to take wiser steps forwards together, towards a more beautiful future.

About the Course:

Menopause is a holy initiation, a pause in ‘normal life’ that catapults you into an unknown territory. What you may not know is that there is a meaningful process at work – an inner orchestration that is exquisitely designed to deliver you home to your true self.

The deep truth is, menopause is a moment of powerful awakening.

It profoundly serves the woman and the whole community of life. Initially it reveals your shadow, your wounding, in order that you might fully receive yourself and be freed to be who you are. And thus come into a sweet intimacy with life and what it is calling you to step up to.

The course will:

  • Give you a deep understanding of the ‘infrastructure’ of menopause. Think of it as the instruction manual for navigating this spiritual territory.
  • Leave you feeling held and readied to traverse this initiation in a dignified way, able to feel your wholesomeness even as you face being undone, provoked and at times abandoned.
  • Provide you with the psycho-spiritual skills you need to hone in order to birth yourself and thrive in post-menopause country.Make meaning of menopause even if you are right in the middle of it or have already been through it.
  • Reveal the awakening process that is menopause and restore its rightful place within the context of your soul’s maturation.

It is crucial now that we all come together to serve the planet in our own unique ways. Our cycle is coded with our particular gifts and menopause is the ultimate moment of bringing us into alignment with ourselves and these gifts so that we may be potent and effective agents of change in the world.

This course is designed to support you to discover a deep peace with who you are and, from this resourced well spring, step into your full authority and leadership. The world needs more women in their full power. The world needs you.

You will learn:

  • How to prepare for menopause.
  • How to recover the ‘backstory’ or lost years of your menstrual cycle if you are already in or post menopause.
  • The spiritual architecture of the menopause transition – the 5 archetypal phases of awakening.
  • Accompanying pitfalls, challenges and possibilities you may encounter.
  • The keys to access the wisdom of each phase of the transition.
  • The crucial skills and practices you will need to navigate menopause – and how to cultivate them.
  • Alexandra’s personal recommendations for tending to health symptoms.
  • Menopause can be a homecoming, a feeling of at last recognising who you are and having the kindness and strength of heart to finally receive and anoint yourself as OK. That is the liberating power of menopause.

This course is for any woman who:

  • Is in her early to mid-forties and older*
  • Is currently going through menopause
  • Is post menopause

*If you are younger than this but feel a strong desire to join please do so with an understanding that it will be more of a theoretical exercise. You will, in a sense, be sitting in on something that you can't fully participate in. It may however serve you to have ‘advanced notice’ of menopause and offer you information you can pass on in your professional work.
