In-touch Commissioning news for practices

  Stakeholders' e-bulletin - Summer 2013
  Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to our first newsletter since the CCG became an official NHS statutory body on 1st April 2013.

As a new organisation, we are keen to explore new and different approaches to the challenges which we face locally and we are committed to working closely with our patients, partners and the public to address them. As part of this, we are launching a new initiative to ensure that we are listening to local patients, relatives, and carers through sharing their stories to highlight both the positive and negative aspects of care and how they think services could be improved.

I would also like to share with you important information around local areas of work we are progressing here in South Tyneside, including working with our partners to develop plans to address A&E and other urgent care pressures, as well as setting out our commitment to making sure that the services we commission are safe, high quality and as integrated as possible.

Finally, please do take time to look at our new Prospectus which sets out our vision, priorities and who is who in the CCG. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in this important year.

Dr David Hambleton, Chief Officer

Across the country, usage of the service is growing quickly.  Latest data available from April showed that there were 566,532 calls to the 111 service compared to 360,526 the previous month.

NHS England reports the majority of NHS 111 services in England are now meeting the performance standards (87 percent of calls answered in 60 seconds and just 4 percent of calls were abandoned after waiting longer than 30 seconds).

Quality and patient safety

The publication of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry highlighted serious failings in the NHS.  In response, South Tyneside CCG has reviewed the report and its recommendations in detail and will work with our partners to make sure such failings do not happen here in South Tyneside.

We are committed to working with all hospitals and organisations providing healthcare in our area to ensure that South Tyneside residents receive the best possible care, have a positive experience of healthcare and are treated safely.

People in South Tyneside are being asked to give their views to help shape local health services in the future
-

A new initiative is being launched in South Tyneside as part of the plans to ensure that we are listening to local patients and carers.

We want to work with patients and relatives to gather experiences of healthcare in South Tyneside. We have started to make some initial steps with patients, relatives, and carers agreeing to share their stories highlighting the positive and negative aspects of care and how they think the service could be improved.

NHS support plan launched to help hospital and A&E departments keep waiting times in check
-

A&E activity has risen significantly in recent years, with an extra 4 million people a year nationally using emergency services compared with 2004.  Plans to strengthen performance in urgent and emergency care are being put in place across the country to help hospital A&E departments meet demand and tackle waiting time pressures.  A national review will also take place.

NHS England has asked local NHS leaders to come together to form urgent care boards, covering all A&E departments.
